Sustainability

We fish for today and for tomorrow. Our commitment to the ocean runs as deep as the waters we harvest from.

In harmony with the sea

At Brimherji, sustainability isn't a marketing initiative — it's the foundation of everything we do. Our livelihood depends on healthy oceans, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Iceland's fisheries management system, built on science-based quotas and total allowable catch limits, is recognised as one of the most sustainable in the world. Brimherji goes further, exceeding regulatory requirements and investing in technologies and practices that protect marine ecosystems for future generations.

Our goal: to be a fully carbon-neutral seafood company by 2030, while maintaining the highest standards of fish welfare, product traceability, and community responsibility.

Five Pillars of Sustainability

01

Responsible Fisheries

100% of our fisheries are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). We adhere strictly to Iceland's Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) system, which has been instrumental in rebuilding fish stocks since its introduction in 1990.

Our longline vessels employ the most selective fishing method available, with near-zero bycatch rates. Our trawlers use specially designed codends and escape panels to minimise the capture of undersized fish and non-target species.

Climate Action

We are committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Our roadmap includes:

  • Transitioning to hybrid-electric propulsion (Sólfaxi, launching 2027)
  • Optimising fishing routes using AI-driven catch prediction to reduce fuel consumption
  • 100% renewable energy in all onshore processing facilities (achieved 2022)
  • Carbon offset programme for remaining vessel emissions through Iceland's reforestation projects

Zero Waste

We are proud to utilise 100% of every fish we process. Nothing goes to waste:

  • Fillets: Premium food-grade products for human consumption
  • Skin: Processed into marine collagen for cosmetics and health supplements
  • Liver: Extracted for pharmaceutical-grade cod liver oil
  • Bones & trimmings: Converted to premium fish meal for aquaculture
  • Heads & offal: Dried and exported as traditional food products and pet food ingredients

Full Traceability

Every Brimherji product can be traced from sea to plate. Our digital traceability system records:

  • Exact catch location (GPS coordinates), date, and vessel
  • Fishing method and gear type used
  • Processing date, facility, and batch number
  • Cold-chain temperature monitoring throughout logistics
  • Quality inspection results and certifications

Customers can scan a QR code on any Brimherji product to access its complete journey from ocean to table.
